Basic Introduction to Psychodynamic Interventions

This is a core psychotherapy course which is indispensable for a practicing psychiatrist or psychologist. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy was the first psychotherapeutic mehtod developed and still is considered by many to be one of the essential skills that every practicing psychotherapist needs. Whether or not the mental health provider intends to become a psychotherapist, the basic skills and ideas in psychodynamic psychotherapy will prove useful to other activities of the practicing mental health professional, such as assessment, program development, clinical supervision and consultation.
This class will provide students with a rudimentary understanding of the theory and techniques of dynamic psychotherapy. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to evaluate clinets from a dynamic point of view and should be able to perform basic psychotherapeutic interventions using dynamic therapeutic strategies. Special attention will be given to the special needs of native Han and other Chinese populations.
