The Use of Transference and Counter-Transference in Clinical Practice: An Integrated Psychodynamic Model

Presented by Ronald Teague, Ph.D., ABPP

Transference is an inescapable aspect of psychotherapy. Some therapeutic modalities chose to use it to treat the patient and some do not. Many forms of psychodynamic psychotherapy, such as Object Relations, Psychoanalysis and Ego Psychology, have determined that the use of transference is the primary clinical tool in the psychotherapeutic armentarium. Knowing how to not only manage irrational transference reactions but also use the transference to precipitate authentic patient insights is essential for every psychodynamic therapist. In addition, managing clinician counter-transference is crucial for avoiding therapeutic blunders.

The purpose of this particular class is to provide students with a rudimentary understanding of the theory and techniques of managing transference and counter-transference in integrated dynamic psychotherapy. Students successfully completing this course should be able to evaluate a client’s transference reactions from a dynamic point of view and be able to perform basic psychotherapeutic interventions using dynamic therapeutic strategies which will be based upon the therapist’s understanding of the transference/countertransference field.

*This will be a two day workshop
